Locking vs. Non-Locking Covers

The choice between locking and non-locking inlet lids depends on the application and the risk environment. Non-locking lids are standard for most municipal storm drain installations — they’re fast to remove for routine inspection and cleaning, and their weight provides adequate security in most situations. Locking inlet covers are specified where unauthorized access is a concern: near schools, parks, and public gathering areas; on high-profile infrastructure; or anywhere the owner requires documented tamper resistance. Our locking covers use a standard key system — we stock the keys — so maintenance crews aren’t managing proprietary hardware.

TXDOT Compliance in Texas

If you’re working on a TxDOT project or a locally let project within a TxDOT right-of-way, cover specifications are not optional — they must match the applicable TxDOT standard sheet, and submittals are required. Our TXDOT-approved product line includes the 180-18, 190-182, and V1418/V1814 inlet access cover sets bearing the official TxDOT logo casting, as well as the 380-24®R heavy-duty bolted access cover set for storm sewer applications. We maintain submittal drawings and compliance documentation for all TXDOT-spec products, ready to support your project paperwork.

Pipe Inlets & Custom Applications

For pipe outlet and monument box applications, our CMP series reversible pipe rings and covers are available in 12″, 15″, 18″, and 24″ diameters. Custom lettering — “STORM DRAIN,” “SEWER,” your city name, or a utility logo — can be cast into most standard lids. BABA and AIS documentation is available for applicable cast and ductile iron or steel products on federally funded projects.
